Atemzug* (A Breath of Air/A Breath Train)
When talking about rail vehicles, the smokestack of a steam locomotive with a little cloud of steam comes to mind. The steam engine with its smoke has inscribed itself as a collective sign into memory and into visual language. And although the technology has changed completely and the steam locomotive has long since become the high-speed train, the symbolic content of the little puff of smoke remains known and familiar.
A lot of things are moving at the moment: people – cultures – ideas – utopias. The train, movement and locomotion have been given a new presence. The power of these symbols is to be visualized as a permanent sculpture in the artistic setting on the forecourt of the WESTSICHT GKB-Center Graz construction project: as a lasting sign for the present and future, with a look back at history.
The artistic concept takes form in a dynamically shaped, free-standing and polished steel sculpture that captures the ephemeral moment of the cloud of steam and appears in the urban space as a symbolically drawn, emission-free waveform. With a solid anchor as its foundation, the sculpture has a stable grip on the ground as its starting point. From there, as it rises vertically, it begins to form like a wave and expands horizontally. The polished steel gives the sculpture the airiness and lightness of a cloud formation, a touch of movement, a draft of wind or breath. Depending on the sunlight and the position of the sun, the sculpture casts a shadow – a line – a path.
The transience, the weightlessness, the almost floating quality of the steam is symbolically transferred with the claim of a permanent sculpture. An attempt is made to outwit the supposedly irrefutable contradiction. The material is durable, while the form and appearance have a light, dynamic and moving effect, as if they were being dissolved by the reflections of clouds, the sky and the surroundings. Only rarely does the sculpture appear to be tangible in its full dimensions, but mostly as a breath set into the air. As a wave/cloud made of steel, “Atemzug” is a drawing in urban space, wrought out of a contemporary material. It combines history, tradition and innovation into one landmark.

Ist von Schienenfahrzeugen die Rede, erstehen assoziativ der Schornstein einer Dampflok mit einem Wölkchen vor dem geistigen Auge. Die Dampflok mit ihrem Rauch hat sich als kollektives Zeichen in das Gedächtnis wie in die Bildsprache eingeschrieben. Und obwohl sich die Technologie völlig verändert hat und die Dampflok längst zum Hochgeschwindigkeitszug geworden ist, bleibt der Symbolgehalt des rauchenden Wölkchens bekannt und vertraut.
Gegenwärtig bewegt sich sehr viel: Menschen – Kulturen – Ideen – Utopien. Der Zug, Bewegung und Fortbewegung haben neue Präsenz bekommen. Die Kraft dieser Symbole soll in der künstlerischen Setzung am Vorplatz des Bauvorhabens WESTSICHT GKB-Center Graz als permanente Skulptur visualisiert werden: als ein nachhaltiges Zeichen für Gegenwart und Zukunft, mit Rückblick auf die Geschichte.
Das künstlerische Konzept findet Form in einer dynamisch geformten, freistehenden und polierten Stahlskulptur, die den ephemeren Moment der Dampfwolke einfängt und als symbolisch gezeichnete, emissionsfreie Wellenform im Stadtraum erscheint. Die Skulptur hat mit einem soliden Anker als Fundament eine stabile Bodenhaftung als Ausgangspunkt. Von da steigt sie vertikal in die Höhe, beginnt sich wellenähnlich zu formen und dehnt sich in die Horizontale aus. Der polierte Stahl gibt der Skulptur die Luftigkeit und Leichtigkeit einer Wolkenformation, einen Hauch von Bewegung, einen Wind- oder Atemzug. Je nach Sonnenbestrahlung und Sonnenstand wirft die Skulptur einen Schatten – eine Linie – einen Weg.
Die Vergänglichkeit, das Schwerelose, fast Schwebende des Dampfes wird symbolisch transferiert mit dem Anspruch einer permanenten Skulptur. Dabei wird versucht, den vermeintlich unumstößlichen Gegensatz zu überlisten. Das Material ist beständig, Form und Erscheinung wirken dagegen leicht, dynamisch und bewegt, als ob sie sich auflösen würden durch die Spiegelungen von Wolken, Himmel und Umgebung. So erscheint die Skulptur nur selten in ihrer vollen Dimension fassbar, meist jedoch als in die Luft gesetzter Hauch. „Atemzug“ als Welle/Wolke aus Stahl ist eine Zeichnung im urbanen Raum, gefertigt aus einem zeitgemäßen Material. Sie lässt Geschichte, Tradition und Innovation zu einem Wahrzeichen.
